Description: The University of Montana's annual Buddy DeFranco Jazz Festival is a celebration of jazz performance and education. Buddy DeFranco, a part-time resident of Whitefish, is widely regarded as 'the supreme virtuoso of (the clarinet) and an innovator who defies category and time'. (Ted Panken, Downbeat Magazine).Buddy DeFranco lends his name and presence to a festival that, for over 20 years, has given high school and college jazz ensembles the chance to learn from and enjoy performances by top-notch jazz musicians and educators. With an agenda that includes daytime adjudication and clinics for the high school ensembles, the festival features a different performing artist on each of its two evening concerts. School jazz bands perform during the day (both days) and receive adjudication comments from renown clinicians. It is non-competitive. Evening concerts both nights featuring Buddy De Franco, UM Jazz Band I, All Star Jazz Trio and guest artists.
