Description: The Special Olympics State Basketball Tournament brings together approximately 450 developmentally disabled athletes from across the state to compete in team play and individual skills competition. Volunteer coaches provide a minimum of eight weeks of basketball training in their home communities prior to the event. On arrival in Butte, Special Olympics athletes are prepared for the pace and intensity of competition.The event also emphasizes the larger opportunity for athletes to socialize and share gifts, skills and friendships with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community. During their stay in Butte, athletes enjoy exciting Opening and Closing Ceremonies that feature the running of the Special Olympics Flame of Hope. The popular dinner and dance is an evening of high-spirited fun for everyone who attends the tournament. Spectators are invited to enjoy the event by attending Opening and Closing Ceremonies and to view tournament play at the various locations each day.
