Description: A highlight of the winter season, the Special Olympics Montana State Winter Games bring together more than 200 Special Olympics athletes and their coaches for three days of winter sports competition at The Big Mountain Ski and Summer Resort in Whitefish. Under the guidance of dozens of volunteer coaches, athletes train on the slopes and trails near their home communities for a minimum of eight weeks prior to the event.The event also emphasizes an expanded opportunity for athletes to socialize and share gifts, skills and friendships with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community. While in Whitefish, participants enjoy a dazzling Opening Ceremonies that features a torch light parade down the mountain. A traditional dinner and dance marks an evening of fun and socializing for everyone who makes the trip. Spectators are warmly invited to enjoy the event by attending Opening and Closing Ceremonies and to view tournament play at the various locations each day.
